Hemisections

Preserving the healthy half of a multi-rooted tooth when only one root is diseased.

What is it?

In select cases involving multi-rooted teeth, a hemisection may be performed to preserve as much healthy structure as possible. This procedure involves removing the diseased root and separating it from the crown, while retaining the healthy root. The remaining root is then treated with root canal therapy and restored.

Hemisection is typically considered when only one root is affected by conditions such as periodontal disease, fracture, or decay, and the remaining root is strong enough to be successfully treated and restored.

What happens if it isn't treated?

If left untreated, severe oral infections will continue to damage the supporting structures of the tooth, leading to pain, abscess formation, and progressive attachment loss.

As this worsens, the tooth may become loose and ultimately require extraction. Infection can also cause significant bone loss, weakening the jaw, where this increases the risk of fractures.
